Raymond Radiguet. One Autograph Letter Signed. 'R.R.' and One Autograph Poem
Raymond Radiguet. One Autograph Letter Signed. “R.R.” and One Autograph Poem

The Car collection boasts a substantial portion of the manuscript output of Raymond Radiguet, whose brief but prolific life was cut short at age 20 by tuberculosis. He published two novels, one in the year of his death, 1923, and the other posthumously; plus a few volumes of poetry and a play. This collection has a draft of Le Diable au corps (The Devil in the Flesh) with some manuscript corrections and additions, and numerous letters and original drafts of poetry. This lot is my favorite and also has a watercolor drawing of a flower.

Paul Gauguin. Autograph Manuscript Signed. 'On Ugliness:...'
Paul Gauguin. Autograph Manuscript Signed. “On Ugliness:…”

There are numerous excellent Paul Gauguin lots in this auction, some with doodles and small drawings. The content of this piece is intimate and unfiltered, and discusses various contemporary artists and their work, including Odilon Redon.

Sir Isaac Newton. Autograph Manuscript, Notes on Physics and Solid Geometry, with Two Diagrams
Sir Isaac Newton. Autograph Manuscript, Notes on Physics and Solid Geometry, with Two Diagrams

An Isaac Newton autograph manuscript. What more needs to be said?

Henri Matisse. Autograph Manuscript Signed
Henri Matisse. Autograph Manuscript Signed

This is a fifteen page draft of Matisse’s first published essay, “Notes of a Painter,” which was published on December 25, 1908 in La Grande Revue, a prestigious French literary journal. This is considered by art historians as one of the most important statements of the 20th century by one who became one of the most influential artist of his time.

John Singer Sargent. Autograph Letter Signed
John Singer Sargent. Autograph Letter Signed

What strikes me about this four page ALS to Claude Monet is that one great artist is asking another for advice concerning a mix of paint for his (Sargent’s) painting, which would be entitled Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose.

Paul Cezanne. Autograph Letter Signed With Sketches
Paul Cézanne. Autograph Letter Signed With Sketches

I have a soft spot for Cézanne after living in his hometown of Aix-en-Provence, and though decoding and translating this letter was no easy task, it ultimately revealed the touching request of an artist suffering his final illness.

Marie Laurencin. Manuscript Sketchbook and Autograph Letter Signed
Marie Laurencin. Manuscript Sketchbook and Autograph Letter Signed
This wonderful item – part sketchbook, part dream journal, part poetry anthology, and part diary – gives its reader a glimpse into the interior life of a fascinating avant-garde Parisian artist. Laurencin’s ruminations, most of which appear to be written during her exile to Spain in 1917, are as heartbreaking as they are beautiful.
