The Double Auction of HIWEPA AG on 12 October 2019 in Dornach / Baslewas a great success! Many participants gathered early in the morning, in the dignified atmosphere of the Dornach Monastery Library for the HIWEPA Auction 37 of Chinese Imperial Government Loans, mainly from the end of the Qing-Dynastie, from the “Reichsbank Treasure“, sold by the Federal Republic of Germany. Numerous interested parties from all over the world joined the auction online.

Already when the first lot was called, things really got going: lot 1, a group of 35 £25 Chinese Imperial Government Loan from 1896, offered for CHF 200, finally hammered at 750. Lot 2, a group of 136 of the same loan, but unissued Reserve Stocks, offered for 1’000.- sold for 12’000.-. At lot 24 with 750 papers of the 1925 Skoda £1000 bond, the ticker finally stopped at the fabulous sum of CHF 70’000.- ! Lot 25, a historically very important and probably unique Bond of the Kaiserlich Chinesische Regierung, issued by the Nationalbank für Deutschland from 1895, won the highest bid for a single lot with CHF 22’000. After 2 hours of animated bidding all 48 lots found a happy buyer and fetched a total amount of over CHF 310’000!
Many participants commented that this event was clearly the Historic Shares & Bonds Auction of the year! In her first reaction, Dr. C. Budde-Hermann, Senior Executive Officer from the German Federal Ministry showed herself delighted and even overwhelmed by the excellent organization of the auction by HIWEPA AG and the outstanding result of the sale. Net proceeds of the sale will go in full to the compensation fund for the reparation of Nazi injustice.
After a short break, HIWEPA Auction 38 of Historic Shares & Bonds Worldwide started in the early afternoon. Now the floor bidders had a better chance to get their turn and people saw some interesting and animated bidding in the room for many items. This smaller auction closed with a good result of a total over CHF 50’000. Highlights were, for instance, lot 370: Wengernalp Railway and Lot 259: Elektrische Gurtenbahn AG both sold for a total of CHF 3’500. Lot 159: Standard Oil Company for 2’875.-, F. Hoffmann-La Roche & Co AG for 1’840, and Lot 380: La Real Compania de Comercio Establecida en Barcelona for CHF 2,530.
In his first comment, HIWEPA Auctioneer Dr. P. Christen, underlined the excellent quality and rarity of most of the items sold in both HIWEPA Auctions. He thanked all the bidders, but also consigners, for these two unforgettable auctions and is already looking forward to all the new consignments that are already in the pipeline for HIWEPA Auction 39, next year, in Spring 2020.
